China recorded 50 new symptomatic infections in the community on October 25, a record high for the number of new infections in a day since the new outbreak began in the country on October 17.

China’s Ministry of Health said on October 26 that, of the 50 new Covid-19 cases, 32 were recorded in Inner Mongolia, northern China.

The latest outbreak in China has spread to 11 provinces, cities and autonomous regions in less than two weeks, after seven travelers to Shaanxi and Gansu provinces as well as Inner Mongolia were found to have Covid

Many local health authorities said that the genetic sequencing process showed that the virus causing the new outbreak in China belongs to the Delta variant with higher infectiousness.

`The new wave of Covid-19 is caused by the Delta variant. Some patients have high viral loads, indicating a strong risk of infection,` said Wu Liangyou, deputy director of the NHC’s disease control department.

In Inner Mongolia, local authorities have ordered hotels and residential areas to be blocked, not allowing people to enter or leave the areas.

With only 100 days left before the Winter Olympics, China is accelerating the pace of epidemic control.

Since October 17, China has recorded more than 200 community infections in more than 10 provinces and cities.

In the context of the increasingly widespread epidemic, Beijing has also limited the reception of domestic tourists.

Starting this week, Beijing bans entry to people who have been to localities with infected cases in the past 14 days, even if they are Beijing residents who want to return home.

Elsewhere in China, anti-epidemic measures are even stricter than Beijing’s.

In Gansu province, the government locked down Lanzhou city, the capital of the province with a population of 4 million, after recording 6 cases of infection on October 26.

The rapid spread of the virus continues in China, even though about 75% of the country’s population – more than a billion people – has been fully vaccinated.
